Juneteenth Celebration

Saturday, June 22, 2024 @ 10:00am
Historic Rosedale

Here at Historic Rosedale, we honor and commemorate Juneteenth, when all the enslaved persons in the United States became free. In commitment with our mission statement as we present an authentic view of the enslaved individuals who forcibly labored at Historic Rosedale, we will be hosting a FREE Juneteenth event on Saturday June 22nd from 10:00am-3:00pm.

We will first open with a litany and prayer from Reverend Bernetta Wright, a descendant of one of the enslaved individuals at Historic Rosedale, followed by a series of song selection from singer Kim Butler. Around 10:30am, Rev. Wright and fellow Historic Rosedale descendant, Tamia Allen Williams, will speak in a panel discussion facilitated by John Cooper, the African American Legacy Project Coordinator for Historic Rosedale.

This panel discussion will ask Rev. Wright and Tamia Allen Williams about “What freedom means to them” as it coincides with their relationship and understanding as Black descendants of enslaved persons at Historic Rosedale. Coinciding with our scheduled program, the Lovn3D Women’s Ministry Black mobile library truck will be on Historic Rosedale premises all day. The Lovn3D mobile library specializes on creating pathways for the accessibility of books relating to African American children.

All day we will have blacksmithing demonstrations from our resident blacksmith, Jason Blanchett. Along with our regularly scheduled 11:30am and 1:00pm guided house tours (guided house tours are available for an extra fee). We will have various demonstrators showing African American crafts and trades such as quilting and basket weaving, along with custom coloring books for children. From the traditional Juneteenth celebration, originating in Galveston, Texas, we will also be passing out an assortment of red drink and food to all visitors.
