Revolutionary War-Era Cherokee Chief to Visit Charlotte

The Mecklenburg chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, will welcome special guest Revolutionary War-Era Cherokee Chief Attakullakulla on September 14, 2017 in Charlotte, NC at the Hilton Charlotte Executive Park Hotel. Attakullakulla was the Peace Chief of the Cherokee Nation from about 1754 until his death (ca.1780-1783). He was called the "most important Indian of his day." He was trained to become a leader among the Cherokee people.

Attakullakulla is portrayed magnificently by Captain Robert K. Rambo (USA, Ret.), who earned his BA (History) from the Virginia Military Institute, his teacher certification (History) at UVAWise, and his M.A. (US History Cherokee Studies Program) at Western Carolina University. His research centered on Attakullakulla during the 18th century.

“Chief Attakullakulla made peace overtures to the Americans, which resulted in the Treaty of Fort Patrick Henry in April 1777, wherein the chiefs agreed to neutrality in the war between the British and the Americans,” said Jay Joyce, president of the Mecklenburg SAR.

“Our chapter presents at least four of these community educational, entertainment and history programs each year,” said Joyce. “Everybody is welcome from any school, community, organization and the mainstream public.”
