Historic South End

History
Historic South End has its beginning in the 1850s when the first railroad line came to Charlotte, connecting the Queen City to Columbia and Charleston, SC. Over the years a thriving manufacturing community sprang up along the tracks, centered on the burgeoning textile industry. The area declined during the 1970s and 80s, only to be revived in the 1990s as restaurants, shops, and design-related industries discovered the beauty and versatility of the old mills and warehouses.

Tax District
The South End Development Corporation was formed in the 1990s to promote the activities of the area, and in 1999 the city created a special taxing district to fund those activities. The Historic South End tax district runs from Morehead Street on the north to Remount Road on the south and from South Boulevard on the east to South Tryon Street and Winnifred Street on the west.

Currently
On July 1, Historic South End merged operations with Charlotte Center City Partners. The district still operates as a distinct neighborhood and tax district, but Charlotte Center City Partners (CCCP) now manages the contract through the city. Two members of the previous HSE Board have joined the CCCP Board: Gaines Brown and John Stamas. Former board member Rick Thurmond is serving on The Charlotte Shout board through CCCP.

Friends of Historic South End
The HSE board is now leading the formation of a neighborhood advocacy group, called Friends of Historic South End. The group will meet on a regular basis to discuss issues facing the neighborhood. Friends of HSE will communicate with the HSE Director and the HSE representatives on the CCCP Board.
